relationships, confidence or daily life;

You don't have to wait until things

become "serious enough"

Frequently Asked Questions

Engaging in therapy offers the opportunity to revise patterns and build tools for a more fulfilling life. Below are answers to common questions specifally relevant to eating disorders about working with me at Elizabeth Grace Psychology.

Do I need a diagnosis?

The answer depends on how you wish to fund your sessions.

Medicare offer 40 rebated sessions per calendar year. This requires a GP referral for what is known as an Eating Disorder Management Plan.

However you can just start with either private funding claiming on your healthfund or using a Mental Health Care Plan.

During this time we can explore your immediate needs and you can then decide if you wish to explore a diagnosis or just continue psychological sessions.

Can I use a Mental Healthcare Plan?

Yes commencing with a Mental Heathcare plan is quite common. During this time we explore what your needs are and how you wish to work with me. However under a Mental Healthcare Plan, Medicare only allow 10 sessions per calendar year while an eating disorder plan allows 40.

Can I see you via Telehealth?

Yes i welcome Telehealth which allows me to work accross all of Australia and also gives greater flexibility for clients.

Do you work with adolescents?

Yes AS LONG AS THE INDIVIDUAL IS OVER 14 years of age and is ready to work with me 1-1. Until the client is 18 years of age there must be a consenting guardian available to support the adolescent. These are general guidelines and I am open to exploring each individuals needs. So please book a 15 min complimentary session to explore this with me directly.

What happens in the first appointment?

The first appointment is where the individual gets to know the therapist and usually is just sharing what is challenging the individual. There is no set outcomes that must be achieved. My strategy is that this is the clients session and therefore the client chooses what is covered. The goal is to build a sense of safety and connection. SLOWLY is an important construct that must always be linked with respect for the clients needs and capacity. Basically I work with you where you are at.

How long does recovery take?

Eating disorders are complex and often involve many areas of an individuals life. Therefore there is no standard timeframe. Recovery is not necessarily evidenced by no challenges. It is more about gaining control over the behaviours that have compromised your life.

Will my GP be involved?

Yes if you are coming with a Medicare referral, I will be required to send reports to the GP. However if you are privately funded initially this is not required. However as treatment progresses you will need to work with a team of professionals to support various aspects of your eating disorder if you choose to be diagnosed. However with everything you are the client and you are not bound to do anything you do not choose. I am here to support you.
